SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Maurice Sendak, author and illustrator of the book "Where the Wild Things Are," will be one of three nationally-recognized illustrators Katherine Thomerson will discuss during her lecture at Cal State San Bernardino on Thursday, Nov. 5. Thomerson, who teaches English and children's literature at CSUSB, will spotlight Sendak during her lecture. "Where the Wild Things Are" was recently converted into a movie and currently is showing in theatres. The lecture will be held in the university's Pfau Library in room 4005 at noon, and it is free and open to the public. The coordinator of the liberal studies program at CSUSB, Thomerson is a writer of young adult novels. She also has been the children's arts commissioner for the city of Redlands and a board member for the Redlands Shakespeare Festival. Sendak, who was born in 1928 in Brooklyn, NY, is best known for writing and illustrating the book, "Where the Wild Things Are." The film was directed by Spike Jonze and opened on Oct. 16. Among his many awards, Sendak was the first recipient of the Astrid Lindren Memorial Award, which is one of the most prestigiouschildren's literature prizes. Besides Sendak, Thomerson will also concentrate on well-known illustrators Marla Frazee and Kathryn Brown. Frazee had her first book, "World Famous Muriel and the Magic Mystery," published in 1990. She has been recognized for her illustrations and in 1998 was given the Excellence in Illustration Award by the Southern California Council on Literature for Children and Young People for "The Seven Silly Eaters." Brown is known for her use of translucent watercolors. Critics have said that Brown's illustrations tell yet another story besides the one being told through the narrator. Brown has also received many awards, including the Washington Children's Choice Picture Book award for her illustration in "Tough Boris."
