SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Cal State San Bernardino's Coyote Radio has been named one of the top five college radio stations in the nation and is a finalist for the mtvU "Radio Woodie" award, which will be presented to the best college station in the United States, as voted by students nationwide.

Online voting at the "Radio Woodie" Web site for the final top spots ends Monday, Nov. 9.

Nearly 3 million votes were submitted by students from around the nation, placing CSUSB's Coyote Radio in the top five along with KCOU 88.1 from the University of Missouri; WPTS 92.1 from the University of Pittsburgh; WCRD 91.3 from Ball State University; and KUPS from the University of Puget Sound.

Voting continues on the Web site mtvU.com, and the "2009 mtvU Woodie Awards," the only awards to honor the music voted best by the college audience, will take place on Nov. 18, at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City. Winners will be announced on Nov. 18 on the MTV Web site and televised on MTV on Dec. 4.

Lauded for championing artists before they achieve mainstream success, the student-run radio station represents the new music vanguard long since abandoned by traditional FM radio.

The nominees were chosen determined by accolades from CMJ College Radio acknowledgements, Princeton Review Nominations, online votes and independent questionnaires completed by a cross-section of record labels. This year mtvU utilized RateMyProfessors.com to let students narrow down the nominees via online voting at the site.

The recognition from mtvU follows an earlier recognition by iTunes ranking Coyote Radio as one of the most popular national college radio stations on its Web site.

mtvU is the official Web site of mtvU network, a channel run by MTV devoted exclusively to music videos popular among college students and music by independent college bands and college culture in general.

To be eligible for the award, a college radio station must offer a diverse, fresh selection of local/"indie" artists to their student body. Coyote Radio recently moved to the all local/indie band format in April.

To vote for Coyote Radio as the best college radio station in the nation, go to the "Radio Woodie" Web site. Voters can vote as many times as they like.

Coyote radio can be heard streaming online at the Coyote Radio Web site, on iTunes under the "College Radio" tab and during select hours on local TV Channel 3 in San Bernardino.
