Haas honored at NCAA award dinner

SAN BERNARDIN0, Calif. - Meghan Haas, who set single-season and career records for digs for the Cal State San Bernardino volleyball team, was among 26 female student-athletes who were honored at the 19th annual NCAA Woman of the Year awards dinner in Indianapolis, Ind., on Sunday, Oct. 18.

Haas was one of 30 semifinalists for the award which was presented Sunday night to Lacey Nymeyer, a swimmer from University of Arizona who was a silver medalist for the United States at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China.

Accompanied by Dr. Dwight Sweeney, CSUSB's faculty athletic representative, Haas was given a special NCAA trophy recognizing her position as a finalist.

Haas represented the California Collegiate Athletic Association of NCAA Division II. All the finalists represented each of the three NCAA athletic divisions.

She was the CCAA conference Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2008-2009 with a 3.83 grade point average in kinesiology. She was all-CCAA first team, all-West Region and an American Volleyball Coaches Association honorable mention all-American in her sport. She was also named to the Daktronics all-America third team by vote of sports information directors.

Haas was the outstanding graduate of the kinesiology department this past June, graduating with high honors. She was voted to the ESPN-The Magazine/CoSIDA academic all-District 8 (West Region) team.

During her undergraduate days at CSUSB she served as vice president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Council for two years and volunteered at SAAC-related community service events and charity fund-raising projects such as Make-A-Wish Foundation.

The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors female student-athletes who have completed their eligibility, demonstrated academic and athletics excellence and engaged in community service and leadership opportunities.
