Cal State San Bernardino to be closed Thursday, Oct. 22

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Administrative, student and general operations at Cal State San Bernardino and its Palm Desert Campus will be closed Thursday, Oct. 22, which is a "State Budget Campus Closure Day."

The closure is part of the university's response to a staggering $26 million state budget reduction - a 25 percent decrease from last year's state budget allocation to the campus.

The university will re-open on Friday, Oct. 23. University Police will remain on duty on all days when the campus is closed.

Full-time staff employees on 12-month appointments will be furloughed a total of 24 days over 11 months from Aug. 1 through June 30, 2010. Faculty who are contracted on a nine-month basis will be furloughed 18 days beginning Sept. 1.

Additional State Budget Campus Closure Days are scheduled for Nov. 27 and 30; Dec. 21, 22, 23 and 24 in 2009; Jan. 8; Feb. 12; March 2; April 2 and 27; May 28; and June 25 and 28 in 2010.

Faculty, management and staff will add additional furlough days on an individual basis to meet the furlough requirements, but the campus will remain open on those days.

The CSU negotiated furloughs with most of its various labor unions in response to the massive budget cut to the university system. The combination of employee furloughs and layoffs is expected to generate approximately $275 million in salary and benefits savings throughout the CSU and more than $10 million at Cal State San Bernardino. Approximately 85 percent of the university's total annual expenses consist of salary and benefits payments.

The furloughs are being done in conjunction with other steps to deal with the budget cut, including increased student fees and reduced enrollment.
