CSUSB students, alumni and professor honored at '30 Under 30' Latino/Native American Recognition Breakfast

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Seventeen Cal State San Bernardino students, alumni and a professor were among the 30 honorees at the 2009 "30 Under 30" Latino/Native American Recognition Breakfast at CSUSB's Obershaw Dining Room. The third annual event hosted by state Assembly member Wilmer Amina Carter (D-Rialto) on Sept. 19 recognized a total of 30 young professionals during Hispanic Heritage Month, celebrated Sept. 15 through Oct. 15. They were recognized for their accomplishments in their workplace, schools and colleges and service to their communities. "They were honored for their talents, skills and achievements," said Carter, who received both her bachelor's and master's degrees from Cal State San Bernardino. "They serve as role models to all young people and demonstrate what is possible through passion, dedication and perseverance," she said. Cal State San Bernardino alumni honored were: Vanessa Barrientos of Pomona; Ryan Timothy Sack of San Bernardino; CSUSB students honored were: Martin Barboza-Zarate of Fontana; Also recognized was CSUSB professor and alumnus Salvador Jimenez Murguia of Redlands, who teaches sociology in the university's College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, and CSUSB alumna Christina D. Rodriguez of San Bernardino, who is a part-time lecturer in communication studies. Approximately 300 family, friends, and other distinguished guests attended the event emceed by Cynthia D. Olivo, associate dean of counseling and student success services at Pasadena City College and former associate director of admissions and student recruitment at Cal State San Bernardino. The keynote speaker was Christopher Sandoval, inland regional chair for the California Hispanic Chambers of Commerce.
