SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Lou Fernández, who retired in July from his longtime position of provost and vice president of academic affairs at Cal State San Bernardino, will be honored for his contributions to diversity in the geosciences at the Geological Society of America's annual meeting Oct. 18-21 at the Oregon Convention Center in Portland. Fernández will be honored at a reception co-sponsored by the GSA Committee on Diversity in the Geosciences, Friends and Colleagues of Dr. Lou Fernández and NSF's Opportunities for Enhancing Diversity in the Geosciences Program, at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 20. Fernández joined Cal State San Bernardino as a professor of geological sciences and dean of the university's College of Natural Sciences in July 1991. He served as acting vice president for academic affairs in 1994 before being named to the permanent position in 1995. He subsequently had the title of provost added in 1998. During his nearly 18 years of service, Fernández provided CSUSB with leadership on a variety of successful academic endeavors - from development of the university's strategic plan in 1998, to the launch of CSUSB's first engineering and M.F.A. programs and its initial doctorate program. In addition, he helped establish the university's Teaching Resource Center, the Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum, a host of new centers and institutes, and the Office of Online and Distributed Learning. He was also instrumental in working to develop Cal State San Bernardino's Palm Desert Campus, internationalizing the university, and promoting faculty research by establishing the position of associate provost for research. More than 6,500 geoscientists from around the world are expected to gather at the Geological Society of America's annual meeting. Established in 1888, the Geological Society of America provides access to elements that are essential to the professional growth of earth scientists at all levels of expertise and from academic, government, business and industry sectors.
