SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Cal State San Bernardino geology professors Joseph S. Salazar, Britt W. Leatham and Sally McGill will present their research findings at the annual Geological Society of America convention, Oct. 18-21 in Portland, Ore. Salazar, Leatham and McGill will talk of their research from different terrains throughout Southern California. Salazar will explain his research from diverse canyons in the Inland Empire and along the San Andreas Fault. He has new information about the slippage rate of plates along the fault lines, and how it pertains to the coming of a possible "Big One," which Southern Californians have been dreading for years. Leatham will present his findings on sedimentary deposits he recently investigated on the beaches of the San Pedro shelf, part of the continental shelf just off the Southern California coast near the Los Angeles/Long Beach Harbor. He will also elaborate on his finds in canyons along the California-Nevada border. In that area, he found many fossils of ancient, pre-historic marine life. McGill will describe the findings of a research team comprised of seven local high school teachers and their students, and eight CSUSB students, in and around the San Bernardino Mountains. They, like Salazar, were also investigating the San Andreas Fault and its slippage rates. The 2009 Geological Society of America Annual Meeting and Exposition will be held in Portland at the Oregon Convention Center, with approximately 6,500 scientists from all over the country expected to attend.
