CSUSB theatre arts department offering traveling puppet show to preschools

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The Department of Theatre Arts at Cal State San Bernardino will take its touring puppet show on the road to preschool classes starting this fall.

The puppet show, called "Oh So Silly Animal Stories," is produced and directed by Johanna Smith, associate professor of theatre education at CSUSB.

"Oh So Silly Animals" is scheduling performances at preschools and kindergartens, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from Nov. 3-Dec. 3. Show times will usually be in the mornings between 9-10 a.m., although other times are available.

The show will travel to preschools throughout San Bernardino, Riverside, Los Angeles and Orange counties. The cost is $100 for one show, and $125 for two shows. A deposit is required to reserve an appearance.

The puppet show consists of three humorous international children's fables: "The Monkey and the Crocodile," from India: "How the Chipmunk got His Stripes," from the United States; and "The Squeaky Bed," from Puerto Rico. Each story will have musical numbers and average about eight minutes each. The entire show will be 25 minutes long.

Most of the puppet characters are animals, of course, including a chipmunk, bear, crocodile and monkey, along with a bumbling, silly human family. Smith will also provide educational materials for the teachers and their students.
