SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Many Native American tribes from throughout the United States and Canada will come together at Cal State San Bernardino over the weekend of Oct. 9-11 as the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians hosts its annual Pow Wow. Historically, a "pow wow" was the traditional phrase for a Native American tribal peace gathering, or a meeting where warring tribes or tribes and white men could meet to negotiate. But it also has been a gathering for the exchange of cultural ideas, artifacts and appreciation, which is the focus of the October event at CSUSB. The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians is sponsoring the Pow Wow, which will bring major tribes from around North America, including the Navajo, Apache, Sioux, Lakota, Comanche, Cherokee and the local San Manuel tribe together to interact with each other. It will also be a chance for the public to become more familiar with and learn more about Native American tribes. Tribal members will dress in native, traditional costumes, and vendors will be on campus offering the wares of each respective tribe, including clothing, artifacts and art. The event will include native music and dance shows, as well as competition for "Best in Show" honors. Admission is free and parking at the university is complimentary for this event. The schedule:
