SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - If people feel free trade and globalization took their jobs away or are decreasing wages, renowned economist and author Daniel Griswold will explain why that's not exactly the case.

Griswold will speak at Cal State San Bernardino for the Business Stimulus Series, which is sponsored by the County of San Bernardino Economic Development Agency and CSUSB's College of Business and Public Administration.

The program is scheduled for today, Wednesday, Oct. 7, from noon-1:30 p.m. in the university's Santos Manuel Student Union, rooms 215-218.

Registration is $30 for CSUSB faculty and staff and $10 for students. Seating to Griswold's seminar is limited. Participants are encouraged to register before Oct. 7.

While free trade and globalization have taken jobs from the American public, Griswold argues that the increased competition from foreign markets is actually forcing American companies to step up the quantity and quality of their products.

Ultimately, he says, the open international market can only help the American economy and provide more jobs in the long run. He does believe, however, that free trade and globalization has played a significant part in creating the deep recession the country is in. Still, even that can be overcome, says Griswold.

Since 1997, Griswold has been the director of the Center for Trade Policy Studies at the Cato Institute in Washington, D.C. He is also a respected author who has written several books on the economy and many financial articles for a variety of publications, and he has been a regular consultant on C-SPAN, CNN, PBS, The BBC and FOX News.

The Business Stimulus Series is a series of seminars put on by the county and CSUSB to educate people during the current difficult financial times. Each seminar will feature a prominent business leader or economist who is doing his or her part to help the economy recover. Each session will also include lunch and an opportunity to network.
