SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - "StarTrek: The Next Generation" screenwriter Peter S. Beagle will discuss his work and read from his writings today, Thursday, May 7, at California State University, San Bernardino's Pfau Library. Publishing his first novel, "A Fine and Private Place," at the young age of 19, Beagle is best known as the author of "The Last Unicorn," as well as a screenwriter for the 1978 Ralph Bakshi animated film, "The Lord of the Rings." He has received many honors, including the Hugo Award, and the Inkpot Award in 2006, the Nebula Award and the Washington Science Fiction Association's Small Press Award in 2007. "It is important to have Peter Beagle visit CSUSB, because he is able to speak on issues of diversity that no one else can," says Joe S. Sanders, an English professor at CSUSB. "Beagle has first-hand knowledge of intellectual Jewish traditions, particularly through his relationship with his famous uncles, who were key painters in the early 20th century, and through his relationship with his father, who was instrumental in the organization of educational labor." Beagle's appearance will include a lecture, question and answer period, as well as an autograph session. The presentation is sponsored by the CSUSB Diversity Committee, Intellectual Life and Visiting Scholars Committee, along with the Pfau Library and the CSUSB English department. The event is open to the public, and starts at 7 p.m. in room PL-4005 of the Pfau Library. Admission is free, and parking is $5.
