SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Officials from Riverside Community College District's Moreno Valley Campus and California State University, San Bernardino have signed a new dual admissions agreement that will allow students to be admitted to RCC Moreno Valley and CSUSB at the same time. Cal State San Bernardino signed similar agreements with Riverside City College and the college district's Norco Campus in 2008. Last month, the university and Mt. San Jacinto College signed a dual admissions agreement, and Cal State San Bernardino also has similar dual admissions agreements with San Bernardino Valley College, Chaffey College, Victor Valley College, College of the Desert, Palo Verde College and Copper Mountain College. CSUSB President Albert Karnig and Riverside Community College Moreno Valley Campus President Monte Perez unveiled the details of the partnership at a news conference today, Wednesday, March 18, at the Moreno Valley Campus. Officials from RCCD and CSUSB are optimistic that the new program will further increase the transfer rate of college-going students. "On behalf of the Moreno Valley Campus, Riverside Community College District, I am excited about the dual admissions agreement being signed by President Al Karnig and me," said Perez. "This is a very significant step to providing access to four-year universities and specifically California State University, San Bernardino. Promoting access is Moreno Valley's core mission and we see that having students simultaneously accepted at the Moreno Valley Campus and CSUSB will provide them with the pathway necessary to succeed. My applause to Dr. Karnig and his vision." "Following today's dual admissions agreement with the Moreno Valley Campus, which joins the Norco Campus and Riverside City College, we're delighted to now to be a partner with all three Riverside Community College District campuses," said Karnig. "These dual admissions agreements are becoming increasingly more valuable, not only as an incentive for community college students to continue their education through the baccalaureate level, but also as a guarantee that the door will be open when they are ready to transfer to CSUSB. This is an added benefit, given our current limitations on the number of students we can enroll at the university." Dual admissions agreements are one of a number of initiatives between the California State University and California's community college system designed to strengthen and build upon existing articulation efforts, said Robert McGowan, CSUSB associate vice president for enrollment services. The goals of the agreement are to increase the transfer rate from RCCD campuses to CSUSB, increase the completion rate of Moreno Valley Campus students once they enroll at the university, strengthen articulation efforts and coordinate coursework between the district and the university. Students who enter into the agreement will be required to complete 60 semester credits while maintaining a minimum 2.0 grade point average at the Moreno Valley Campus. Applicants will be required to attend seminars each semester and meet with college counseling staff to set goals and complete university admission requirements. A unique facet of the agreement entitles the students to additional services at Cal State San Bernardino, including library access and the opportunity to cross-enroll on a space-available basis without paying instructional fees. The program will be evaluated annually for effectiveness. Following the three-year term of the agreement, the RCC District and CSUSB have the option to renew the agreement.
