Administrative, student and general operations at Cal State San Bernardino and its Palm Desert Campus will be closed Friday, Feb. 12, which is a State Budget Campus Closure Day at the university. The closure is part of the university's response to a staggering $26 million state budget reduction - a 25 percent decrease from last year's state budget allocation to the campus.

CSU to add classes to school schedules for fall 2010

The California State University, including Cal State San Bernardino, will allocate $50.9 million in one-time funds to campuses to provide additional course sections and classes for students, as well as student support services. Systemwide, CSU campuses will add up to approximately 8,100 additional course sections and retain additional lecturers for the fall 2010 term.

The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program returns to Cal State San Bernardino this year with free income tax preparation services for low-income and elderly taxpayers. Through the VITA program, CSUSB accounting students will also provide tax preparation services at seven other San Bernardino County locations. This year's program begins on Friday, Feb. 5, and runs through Saturday, April 10.

CSU leads national effort to improve graduation rates

The California State University is leading a national initiative to increase the graduation rate of its students by 8 percent in the next six years. The "Graduation Initiative, " which was announced at the Board of Trustees meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 27, also seeks to reduce by half the gap in degree completion between underrepresented students and their peers.

The third annual statewide survey on higher education by the Public Policy Institute of California revealed that 61 percent of those polled rated the 23-campus CSU system as excellent or good and 55 percent say college is necessary for a person's success. But the poll indicated that many Californians see a college degree as increasingly difficult to attain (65 percent), and more than two-thirds of residents say that many qualified people lack the opportunity to go to college.

Cal State San Bernardino is the beneficiary of a $2.5 million bequest in the estate of long-time San Bernardino resident Evelyn Magnuson, who was an active supporter of scholarships at the university since the early 1990s. The gift, which is the largest bequest the university has received to date, will be split equally between the President's Academic Excellence Scholarships and building funds, said CSUSB President Albert Karnig.

Ever since the Coyote Premier Field and its lush bull-nose hybrid bermuda grass were first used in an intercollegiate soccer match, athletic department officials had been hanging the American flag on the chain link fence that surrounds the field. Now, the soccer field has its own flag pole, thanks to Local 891 of the Professional Firefighters union in San Bernardino, which donated the flag and the pole.

Members of the Service Employee Trades Council-United have ratified a tentative agreement with the California State University for a 2009-2010 labor contract by a vote of 90.5 percent. The agreement, which is in effect until June 30, 2011, maintains the current salary scale with no increases, but provides the option of reopening salary and benefit terms in the 2010-2011 fiscal year. SETC represents approximately 1,000 employees in skilled trades such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters and others who help maintain campus facilities.

Cal State San Bernardino will be closed Tuesday, March 31, in observance of the state holiday commemorating the birth of the late Cesar Chavez, founder and president of United Farm Workers of America. The campus will reopen for business on Wednesday, April 1. Classes will not be in session this week for spring break, although campus administrative offices will be open for the other four weekdays.

Even though morning rush hour traffic can take two hours in the Inland Empire, Robert Stein won't be flying to work anymore. Stein, a longtime professor of mathematics at Cal State San Bernardino's College of Natural Sciences, has been flying between Portland, Ore., and San Bernardino for the past five years each winter quarter. As of the end of the winter 2009 quarter, he is officially retired.

The heavens above Cal State San Bernardino will soon seem much closer through a new state-of-the-art teaching observatory, thanks to a major philanthropic gift from a local family that used to pick grapes on the fields where the university now sits. Former Cal State San Bernardino student athletes are invited to return to the university for two days of activities, including a pair of Coyote basketball games, when CSUSB hosts its inaugural Student Athlete Alumni Weekend Feb. 20-21. The "homecoming" weekend is one of the featured events during the 25th anniversary year for the Coyote athletics program. The celebration continues throughout 2009.
