The birth of graphic design as a profession

Visual communication has been part of human history since the very beginning. It started with man's need to leave marks, imprints or traces to communicate through signs and symbols rather than the spoken language. It has continued uninterrupted. In her lecture Thursday, Nov. 5, Eva Kirsch, director of the Robert V. Fullerton Art Museum at Cal State San Bernardino, will discuss graphic design as a professional discipline and as a genuine part of visual communication history.

 

International Education Weeks celebration at Cal State San Bernardino now underway

In preparation for the anniversary of its bicentennial in May 2010, Cal State San Bernardino's Pfau Library will offer a series of lectures involving city history, trivia and its individuals. The first lecture, "San Bernardino's Bicentennial! May 20, 1810-May 20, 2010," will be Monday, Nov. 9, from noon-1 p.m., in the university's Pfau Library.

 

New certificate program in e-learning to be offered at CSUSB

CSUSB grad captures two Emmys in Los Angeles

Alexandria Gales, a 2008 graduate of Cal State San Bernardino, received two Emmy awards at the 61st Los Angeles Area Emmy Awards. Gales, who is an associate producer at PBS station KCET's So Cal Connected news magazine show, received an Emmy award for the documentary, "Inside Locke High," in the educational reporting category.

Cal State San Bernardino application period for fall 2010 runs through Nov. 30

Students interested in attending Cal State San Bernardino in 2010-2011 are encouraged to file their applications during the priority application period for fall 2010, which runs through Nov. 30. In the past, CSUSB has accepted applications after the priority application period. However, because of severe reductions to the California State University budget, fewer students will be admitted during the coming year and the closing date for applications has not been determined.

Third annual Disability Sports Festival at CSUSB attracts more than 400 participants

Though only three years old, the DisAbility Sports Festival at Cal State San Bernardino continues to grow, as this year's event attracted nearly twice as many participants than last year from throughout the Inland region. The one-day free event held on Oct. 3 in and around the university's Coussoulis Arena had about 400 participants, nearly double last year's amount of 220.

 

Cal State San Bernardino scholarships, facilities benefit from estate gift

Cal State San Bernardino is the beneficiary of a $2.5 million bequest in the estate of long-time San Bernardino resident Evelyn Magnuson, who was an active supporter of scholarships at the university since the early 1990s. The gift, which is the largest bequest the university has received to date, will be split equally between the President's Academic Excellence Scholarships and building funds, said CSUSB President Albert Karnig.

Ever since the Coyote Premier Field and its lush bull-nose hybrid bermuda grass were first used in an intercollegiate soccer match, athletic department officials had been hanging the American flag on the chain link fence that surrounds the field. Now, the soccer field has its own flag pole, thanks to Local 891 of the Professional Firefighters union in San Bernardino, which donated the flag and the pole.

Members of the Service Employee Trades Council-United have ratified a tentative agreement with the California State University for a 2009-2010 labor contract by a vote of 90.5 percent. The agreement, which is in effect until June 30, 2011, maintains the current salary scale with no increases, but provides the option of reopening salary and benefit terms in the 2010-2011 fiscal year. SETC represents approximately 1,000 employees in skilled trades such as electricians, plumbers, carpenters and others who help maintain campus facilities.

Trustees of the California State University heard details of the massive $584 million budget cut facing the CSU for the next fiscal year, and discussed a range of options including employee furloughs, enrollment reductions and potential student fee increases needed to address the deficit. Also, the California State University Employees Union tentatively agreed to furloughs two days a month; that still has to be ratified by the rank-and-file membership. The heavens above Cal State San Bernardino will soon seem much closer through a new state-of-the-art teaching observatory, thanks to a major philanthropic gift from a local family that used to pick grapes on the fields where the university now sits. Potential students are urged to meet the Nov. 30 application deadline. The CSU is already serving 10,000 students for whom the state provides no funding, and all indications are that 2009-2010 will be the second consecutive year that the CSU receives no funding for enrollment growth. Potentially, CSU may curtail enrollment by up to 10,000 students throughout the 23-campus system that includes Cal State San Bernardino.

A field of 120 golfers helped Cal State San Bernardino's athletic department raise just over $50,000 Monday, Nov. 10, at the 13th annual Dave Stockton Coyote Classic.
