Colleagues and friends of the university,

I have some very sad news to share. Earlier today, we learned of the passing of a remarkable philanthropist, entrepreneur and human being – Jack H. Brown. As the iconic Executive Chairman of Stater Bros., he built the company into Southern California’s only locally owned supermarket chain.

His generosity is unprecedented, with a legacy gift that led the CSU Board of Trustees’ decision to name the Jack H. Brown College of Business and Public Administration.

His leadership and philanthropy have been a benchmark for others to follow, creating countless opportunities for economic and social growth at every level of his organization. His commitment to the values and sacrifices of those that served our country in the military was unwavering. He championed education, children’s well-being, hunger relief, health, and help for our nation’s veterans.

Today we share our heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the memory of this wonderful man, and send our condolences to his family and the Stater Bros community.

Tomás D. Morales

President

I had the pleasure of working with Jack, Debbie and many others from the Stater Bros. Family when they began making generous gifts to CSUSB. He was an extraordinary philanthropist who set an example for many others and provided unparalleled support for our students and our university. We were fortunate in so many ways to have had the affiliation with him.

Indeed, he did a lot of good in our community. My prayers will be with his family right now.

Thank you Mr. Brown for all that you were! Your legacy will live on through those that you helped. I was awarded a scholarship from this man’s foundation and had the honor of getting to learn about him and his mission. Thank you Mr. Brown for all you did for our veterans, our under-privileged youth and students here at CSUSB.
