CSUSB professor quoted in article, video about KKK ramping up activity

Huffington Post (United Kingdom) — Brian Levin, director of Cal State San Bernardino’s Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism and professor of criminal justice, comments in an article about a group of Ku Klux Klan members that says it is planning military style combat training for the first time in KKK history — exactly 60 years after the birth of the African-American Civil Rights Movement.

Levin has been working in and around the KKK since the 1970s. “Groups like the Ku Klux Klan sometimes choose to arm themselves because it’s a way of saying ‘we mean business,’” he said.

The article was published June 9, 2014.

Russia Today posted its version of the article, along with the video on June 11, 2014, with the headline “KKK plans to employ US troops in training for upcoming race war,” as did The Voice of Russia.

The Raw Story website also posted its version on June 12, 2014, with the headline “White supremacists distribute fliers at Ft. Carson asking soldiers to fight in coming race war,” linking the story to the discovery of white supremacist recruiting material found at an Army base in Colorado.

On June 13, 2014, Hatewatch, the online blog for the Southern Poverty Law Center, for which Levin formerly worked, posted an excerpt of his comments in “West Virginia Klan leader claims returning military will help them train for ‘the upcoming battle.’”
