Women’s volleyball: Coyotes host NCAA West Regional

For the seventh time in the last eight years and the ninth time since 2001, the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes will play host to the NCAA West Regional volleyball tournament on Dec. 5-7.

CSUSB volleyballThe Coyotes were awarded hosting rights and the region’s top seed on Nov. 25 according to the national governing body in the announcement conducted at the NCAA’s web site.

CSUSB completed its regular season 25-5 overall and is the champion of the California Collegiate Athletic Association at 21-1; its eighth consecutive title. The Coyotes enter the NCAAs having won 22 of their last 23 matches.

“Hosting an NCAA regional is an honor and we look forward to a tremendous tournament next week,” Coyotes head coach Kim Cherniss said. “All eight teams are worthy of reaching the postseason and there’s no question, it’s a well-rounded field.”

CSUSB will face eighth-seed Central Washington in the final opening-round match at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 5. The Wildcats handed the Coyotes’ one of their five losses this season, winning 3-1 on Sept. 7 in the Coyote Classic Tournament.

The Coyotes are joined by fellow CCAA members Sonoma State and UC San Diego. The Great Northwest Athletic Conference is represented by Western Washington, Alaska-Anchorage and Central Washington. The final two teams are from the Pacific West Conference – reigning West Region champion BYU-Hawaii and Dixie State.

The entire regional will be played in the Physical Education Building, also known as “The Den,” due to Fall commencement ceremonies taking place in Coussoulis Arena on Dec. 7.

The NCAA West Region champion advances to the Elite Eight, held Dec. 12-14 at U.S. Cellular Arena in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and hosted by Upper Iowa University.
