Teachers create songbird oasis at school originally established by a CSUSB grad student

The Press-Enterprise — The newspaper wrote about a teacher at North Ridge Elementary School in Moreno Valley, who is working to reclaim a nature preserve originally developed by a Cal State San Bernardino graduate student in the 1990s.

The area that Heidi Krueger is taking back was a M.E.S.A., Model Environmental Science Area, which was started in the 1990s by Sam Petalano. He was working on his master’s degree at CSUSB and received grant monies to create the M.E.S.A. Over the years, it has gone through many changes. At one time, it was heavily used for vermi-composting of lunch wastes, scientific study of pond habitats and the growing of garden fruits and vegetables up until 2002. It was abandoned for about five years.

The article was published Dec. 23, 2013.
