Coyotes men’s basketball coach Jeff Oliver has announced that long-time Southern California coach Reggie Howard will join the basketball staff as associate head coach.
“Reggie is as dialed-in as any coach in Southern California and we’re pleased to have him on board,” Oliver said. “His knowledge of the game is unsurpassed and we expect him to hit the ground running.”
Howard, who spent the last five seasons as head coach at Barstow College, owns 22 seasons of coaching experience and 11 at the collegiate level – all in Southern California.
The former UC Riverside standout began his collegiate coaching career here at CSUSB, helping former head coach Larry Reynolds build the foundation of success that has been emblematic ever since. The Coyotes reached the NCAA tourney in two of his three seasons, capped with their first NCAA regional title in 1999.
After two seasons as an assistant at his alma mater (2000-02), Howard rejoined Reynolds at Long Beach State (2002-07). The 49ers reached the NCAA Tournament in 2007 after sweeping the Big West Conference regular season and tournament titles.
He then spent one season (2007-08) at Mt. San Jacinto College before his five-year stint at Barstow.
Coach Howard earned his bachelor’s degree at UC Riverside in 1991 and later his master’s degree at Cal Baptist (2008).
Howard remains the all-time leader in 3-point FG percentage and ranks second in career assists at UCR. During his time as a Highlander, he played on the 1988-89 team that defeated No. 4-ranked Iowa and reached the NCAA semifinals.
He and his wife Candy are the parents of two sons – Ryan and Blake. The family resides in Riverside.
