Women’s cross country: Cortez, Coyotes earn national academic honors


Freshman Patricia Cortez was named to the 2012 United States Track and Field Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Division II All-Academic Cross Country team.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Team in Division II, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or greater through the most-recent semester (quarter), completed at least 12 credit hours in the semester of cross country competition, and placed in the top 50 percent at the most recent NCAA National Championships or in the top 30 percent at the NCAA Regional Championships.

Gomez placed 39th at the NCAA West Region for the Coyotes, who finished 11th at the event held in Kahuku, Hawaii, last fall.

The Coyotes, under head coach Tom Burleson, also earned team All-Academic honors for the 13th time in the last 14 years.

To qualify as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Cross Country Team, the team must have a cumulative team GPA of 3.00 or better and have compiled a score (finished at least five runners) at their respective NCAA regional championship.
