“Welcome to the CSUSB Family” was the theme of the special 2012 program designed to help incoming Cal State San Bernardino freshmen adjust to college life and be successful.
Organized by the university’s Office of Alumni Affairs and presented during the university’s annual Student Orientation, Advisement and Registration (SOAR) sessions, the alumni relations program was recognized as one of the best in the west when it was selected for a 2013 Award of Excellence from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education, District VII. CASE District VII includes more than 400 institutions in the western region of the U.S.
The “Welcome to the CSUSB Family” program helped connect new Cal State San Bernardino students to the university at the start of their college experience by nurturing a sense of pride in belonging to the university family, providing tips for success in their first year and helping students envision themselves graduating in four years. It was also intended to build awareness of the alumni association and begin teaching students that they are “alumni in the making,” so that they become engaged in alumni association activities after they graduate.
Wristbands with pre-loaded computer flash drives were presented to all freshmen at the end of their two-day orientation experience. The flash drives included the Cal State San Bernardino alma mater lyrics and logo, a survival guide for their freshman year and a video with messages from the recent graduating Class of 2012 to the Class of 2016.
The new students also received a subscription to the alumni association newsletter with alumni success stories, a calendar of alumni association events and programs, and links to CSUSB alumni association Web and social media sites.
Joanna Oxendine, interim director of alumni affairs, and Bea Barragan, alumni partnership coordinator, developed the program, which will be presented a CASE Bronze Award at the annual CASE Awards of Excellence ceremony scheduled for March 2 in San Francisco.
