CSUSB Facilities Services given national honor

The Job Corps, the nation’s largest career technical training and education program for young people that qualify as low income, has awarded Cal State San Bernardino’s Facilities Services department with a “Partner of the Year” award.

US-JobCorps-LogoThe department, which is responsible for the maintenance and service of the university’s 1,732,772 gross square feet of facilities and about 506 acres, received the award last week at a luncheon, said Tony Simpson, the department’s senior director. Facilities Services Grounds Administrative Assistant Gina Hopkins received the honor on behalf of the department, Simpson said.

The award marks the second time the Facilities Services department has been named Partner of the Year. The department, which has provided technical training in office technology, carpentry, electrical, landscaping and plumbing for many years, also received the honor in 2007, Simpson said.

“This is a great partnership and our staff is more than happy to be able to help local young adults get meaningful training to improve the quality of their lives,” Simpson said.

“The students spend approximately six weeks at a time working with our staff to gain experience in these disciplines,” Simpson added.

The Job Corps, which is administered by the U.S. Department of Labor, provides eligible young men and women at least 16 years old with an opportunity to gain the experience they need to begin a career or advance to higher education.

Job Corps offers hands-on training in more than 100 career technical areas, including automotive and machine repair, construction, finance and business services, health care, hospitality, information technology, manufacturing, renewable resources and many more. All training programs are aligned with industry certifications and are designed to meet the requirements of today’s careers.

Job Corps has 125 centers nationwide, including the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
