Campus police shot and killed a 38-year-old Cal State University San Bernardino student outside his apartment after he grappled for an officer’s baton, grabbed and used pepper spray, and then began kicking an officer in the head, say San Bernardino city police officials.

“According to his mother … he’d been off his medications (for bi-polar disorder) for at least a week,” Sgt. Gary Robertson said of Bartholomew Williams, who died at the scene of the 6:56 p.m. confrontation Saturday, Dec. 8, at University Village in the 1500 block of West Northpark Boulevard.

Bartholomew Williams, who was working on his second master’s degree in educational instructional technology, was shot around 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the University Village dorms.

Bartholomew Williams, 38, exhibited “super-human-type strength” during the tussle, using the officers’ pepper spray against them and grabbing one of their batons, said a spokesman for the San Bernardino Police Department, which is investigating the shooting.

SAN BERNARDINO – A 38-year-old Cal State San Bernardino graduate student was fatally shot by campus police early Saturday night at an off-campus dorm.

Campus officers were responding to a call regarding a disturbance in a common area at the University Village dorm complex, 1577 W Northpark Blvd., said Sid Robinson, a CSUSB spokesman.

Bartholomew Williams, 38, was killed when he allegedly became violent Saturday evening at a dorm across the street from California State University San Bernardino.

Officials told KTLA-TV in Los Angeles campus police were dispatched to the residence to investigate a disturbance involving Williams. They found him in a hallway where he allegedly got physical with the officers, who feared for their safety and opened fire, police said.

Cal State San Bernardino officials expressed their sadness and sympathy following an altercation at a campus residential housing unit shortly after 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8.

The San Bernardino Police Department, which is heading the investigation, issued this information Saturday:

California State San Bernardino University Police Officers responded to the University Village student housing complex regarding a disturbance involving the suspect, 38-year-old graduate student Bartholomew Williams. Officers made contact with Williams in the hallway of his dorm. During the contact Williams became aggressive and an altercation occurred. Officers fearing for their safety fired their weapon striking Williams. Williams was pronounced deceased at the scene. One officer received medical treatment at an area hospital for non-life threatening injury.
