Cal State San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus will host a presentation by Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays titled “Moving Equality Forward” on Friday, Oct. 12, from 6-7:30 p.m.
The PFLAG event, which is co-sponsored by the CSUSB University Diversity Committee, and is part of the university’s quarterly Conversations on Diversity series, will take place in the campus’s Indian Wells Theater. Admission is free and parking is paid by CSUSB University Diversity Committee. The Palm Desert Campus is located at 37-500 Cook St.
It will feature an informative panel moderated by John Durkin, coordinator for the PFLAG Speakers Bureau and consists of heterosexual and gay couples, sharing their personal histories and experiences. Topics range from bullying and abuse, to social pressures.
The panel will consist of:
- Gay couple: John Durkin and David Irwin
- Heterosexual couple: Mike and Carol Valasa
- Ron Oden, former mayor of Palm Springs
PFLAG, a non-profit organization formed in the early 1970s, promotes the health and well-being of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender persons, their families and friends through support to cope with an adverse society; education to enlighten the general public; and advocacy to end discrimination and to secure equal civil rights. The organization provides opportunity for dialogue about sexual orientation and gender identity, and acts to create a society that is healthy and respectful of human diversity.
With more than 350 affiliates around the world, the Palm Springs PFLAG chapter actively provides support for people in the Coachella Valley.
CSUSB’s University Diversity Committee has presented the Conversations on Diversity lecture series since 2005 to encourage dialogue among students, staff, faculty and the community about a variety of diverse issues.
Other co-sponsors include the university’s academic computing and media department, College of Natural Sciences, College of Social and Behavioral Sciences, human resources department, sociology department, Office of Undergraduate Studies and the CSUSB Palm Desert Campus.
