Cal State San Bernardino’s new president, Tomás D. Morales, will be honored at a welcome reception on today, Thursday, Sept. 6, from 5:30-8 p.m. at the university’s Santos Manuel Student Union Events Center.
“This event is extraordinarily significant because it demonstrates how our communities are joining together to extend a very special welcome to our new president,” said Frank Rincon, vice president for Student Affairs at CSUSB, who also serves on the Coalition of Inland Empire Latino Organizations (CIELO), which is hosting the event in partnership with the Inland Empire Future Leaders program.
Chaired by Eloise Gomez Reyes, attorney and owner of the Law Offices of Eloise Gomez Reyes in Colton, CIELO is comprised of a variety of Inland Empire organizations, including Arrowhead Regional Medical Center Foundation, Inland Empire Scholarship Fund, Kiwanis of Greater San Bernardino, IE League of United Latin American Citizens, Sinfonia Mexicana and the American Heart Association.
“The Inland Empire community is looking forward to welcoming President Morales at this event,” said Graciano Gomez, co-chair of CIELO and retired Inland Empire business owner. “We want to express our combined regional support during his forthcoming tenure.”
Ernie Garcia, professor emeritus and retired dean of CSUSB’s College of Education, will be the master of ceremonies at the reception. The festivities also will include entertainment by Sinfonia Mexicana’s Mariachi Youth Academy, the San Bernardino Symphony’s String Trio and the CSUSB Jazz Combo. The reception will consist of a brief program, including appetizers and wine.
“I am delighted to welcome Dr. Morales as the new president of California State University, San Bernardino,” said Luis S. Gomez, President Emeritus, Crafton Hills College, CSUSB alumnus and CIELO member. “Having served as a president of a college, I am quite aware of the challenges facing Dr. Morales. Based on his credentials, background and stellar experience, I am most confident he will be more than up to those challenges.”
Since 2007, Morales has been president of the College of Staten Island, The City University of New York. From 2001-2007, he served in various capacities at Cal Poly Pomona, including provost and vice president for academic affairs, vice president for student affairs and professor of education. Prior to joining Cal Poly Pomona, Morales was vice president for student affairs and dean of students at The City College of New York/CUNY from 1994 to 2001.
Morales holds a B.A. in history from The State University of New York, New Paltz, and earned his M.S. and Ph.D. in Educational Administration and Policy Studies from SUNY, Albany. He is one of the few higher education administrators in the United States who has held senior administrative positions at the three largest public university systems in the nation: the California State University, The State University of New York, and The City University of New York.
The reception is free and open to the public; complimentary parking is available in Lot D. Among the sponsors of the event are the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, Molina Healthcare of California, El Chicano newspaper, Cardenas Markets and the Inland Empire Economic Partnership.
