Assemblyman Nestande quits prestigious post over tax vote

The Desert Sun — Palm Desert Assemblyman Brian Nestande stepped down as his chamber’s No. 2 Republican on The Desert SunTuesday after voting to close a tax break benefiting out-of-state companies.

Nestande resigned his caucus chair post after being the lone Republican vote to support AB1500. The bill would eliminate a $1 billion tax break for out-of-state corporations.

If it becomes law, the proceeds would help reduce tuition costs for California students from middle-class families. AB1500 passed the Assembly 54-25, barely meeting the two-thirds threshold. Nestande said his was the deciding vote.
